Popularity...does it even matter?

Would you rather have a small group of close friends,
or
a large group of acquaintances ( casual friends)  ?

Now the real question is... Do you care about popularity? Will you go all out just to achieve it?

It seems to me that so many people these days value popularity above so many other important things.  Of course, being popular isn't a bad thing. But it can be... if you try too hard, if you erase your own personality just to be someone else. Or even worse, if you let the couple of close friends you initially had to drift away... just for the sake of being acquainted with a large group of people. That wouldn't be good, would it? It's not worth it.

It's okay not to be liked by everyone. When it reaches the point in which you try so hard just to get people to like you, everything becomes fake...it comes across as a plead for attention. Close friendships you had with certain people will no longer be the same.

Popularity really isn't that important. Think of it, a couple of years later, when you leave school...will all this matter? What you really need now is a couple of close friends. Genuine friends.... by that I mean people who are willing to stick with you through the thick and thins of your life.

So next time you leave your close friends just to associate with more "popular people"... take a moment to be in your friends' shoe. Do you like what they're thinking of you? No.

Thank you for reading:)
Comment if you have anything to say xx

  1. June this was an amazingly true post. Wow. I would definitely prefer having a small group of close friends, although I can be a pretty bad close friend at times. Thanks for posting this and showing me and everybody what truly matters. If only everyone would follow your advice.

Well, no one can ever be the " perfect" friend. And besides...you're not a bad friend at all ;)

  2. This was really well written :) I have a small group of close friends since Secondary school until now and I'm really glad that we are still very close. I've encountered those who have always wanted to have a large group of friends and at the end of day, they weren't even there for her when she need them. Thanks for sharing ^^

  4. Wow! I would definitely rather have a group of close friends, than a large group of not so close friends!! This was an amazing post June, hit right on the nail! I wish I always remembered this! I think we as teens forget what it means to actually be popular, and that we shouldn't care what others think, but what God thinks of us! <3 loved this!!

  5. Beautiful post! I prefer a close group of friends rather than a large one. I particularly hate being noticed so the whole popularity thing is not for me and I do not seek it whatsoever. I try to do what I like and not giving too much thought about what other might think of me. Doing that is extremely exhausting, mentally speaking

  6. This is very true. We shouldn't hang the value of our lives on what friendships we have. I wasn't what you'd call a popular girl when I was young, but I could hang out with the popular girls and the misfits so to speak and they would both accept me. I had lots of friends in grade school. By the time I got to high school lots of them were gone. Not that they were bad friends or anything, we had just moved different directions with our lives and no one was willing to change their way to fit with the others any more. Now that I'm in college I still have several close friends, but what we call friendship now has changed so much. We don't hang out or talk all the time. In fact we don't talk much at all. By we all know if someone has a problem we can talk to the other about it. I think that's what's important.

  8. I feel as if the urge to be "popular" in high school can lead to one very important lesson once you reach college. That lesson being the importance of networking. Networking brings about jobs, friendships, and heck maybe a friend of a friend who fixes your car for cheap someday. The pressures of being popular in high school can be a bit tough, but as an adult people genuinely become nicer. It's almost as if you get this clean slate to be whoever you want to be and networking helps that journey. Friendships are by far one of the most important things in our lives. With that being said, I have a few close friends whom I can confide in, as well as I can depend on. But there are also a great number of people, we can say acquaintances, that who would be there too even though I dont necessarily speak to them on a daily basis. In my eyes, both kinds or friendships are achievable. I mean who knows, your college science partner could end up being your boss one day? I think it's best to reach out, network, and be genuinely kind to everyone you meet. (:

My point is... I'd rather focus on close friends that I have than trying to go all out to get acquainted with people that don't necessarily care much about you.

  11. I love how you said that people can value popularity above everything else, and one person I know who is "popular", is popular in their own sort of way. They are respected and valued by other people, but they stay true to who they are! Part of the reason they are their own kind of popular is because they treat others the way God wants us to treat others and never says a bad word behind someones back.
Popularity should not be our goal in life, but we should respect everyone, even if they don't like us :)

  12. I agree with you 100%. In high school you see a lot of kids striving for popularity, but is not worth it at all. I sometimes don't understand why to leave your close friends for people who don't have anything in common with you. I had seen people who totally lie to themselves in order to be with the "cool guys" to me that will only guide to loneliness.

    Great post! :D

I've always been one of the more popular students because I'm good at academics, but sometimes I feel overwhelmed by everyone trying to contact me. Since I switched to a new school in September, I find myself missing some really close friends I've been with for a long time.

By the way, you're from Singapore! That's so awesome -- I was in Singapore in March and I was really blown away by how environmentally friendly it is. Coming from another prosperous but small city, Hong Kong, I really admire how conscientious Singaporeans are :D

I often see girls who leaves her real good friends behind just to get closer to the "popular kids" and it´s making me so sad. After all there is so much disappointment and hate.

What you really need now is a couple of close friends. Genuine friends" before I am literally obsessed of becoming a popular kid in school but as soon as time pass by.. I am now a 4th yr.. I know realized that becoming popular isn't a thing well.. its somewhat a part but it doesn't play a huge role.. maybe a half but at the end popularity will not lead you to anything if your brain is empty :) like that one beautiful and popular girl have you guys think that she's brainy or nah :)
